Kitchen and bath remodeling

Five kitchen and bath remodeling ideas to consider now

Whether you plan to sell or stay, a kitchen remodeling or bath spruce-up will add value to your life. Some improvements are mainly cosmetic and add to the visual interest, while others may add to the function and, therefore, some value.

Upgrade countertops

Nothing changes the atmosphere of a room asmuch as the countertop. When remodeled in stone, they add an almost automatic value to your property and, when in the bathroom, they're usually associated with 5-star hotels.

Countertops are kitchen focal points, especially when paired with a sensational floor-to-ceiling, wrap-around backsplash.

Decide first what statement you want the countertops to make? Bold or subtle? Light or dark? Classic, elegant? Then work around that.

Enhance your cabinets

If you are even remotely thinking of selling, know that potential buyers will look at the kitchen, but be mainly concerned with foundational items, like cabinets.

If need be, spruce them up, but it may not have to be an out-and-out replacement. Sometimes just the addition of new knobs or pulls can uplevel them.

If your cabinets have "good bones," you might even consider refacing, where drawers and doors are replaced, and "boxes" get a new veneer.

It's all about color

Since this is cosmetic, don't expect much, if any, return. You can go white with some pops of color, or dramatic with black and white.

Get rid of clutter

You might need to do a little remodeling for your bath, especially if the layout is odd and the room isn't functional.

They might be small rooms, but they are really big deal killers.

One idea: Convert an adjacent closet for supplies such as towels, soaps, shampoos, or add some shelves and drawers. Clutterless does equal efficiency and extra space for this room.

Light and sparkle

Whether remodeling the kitchen or bath, create a full package consisting of recessed, pendant and task lighting, especially if there isn't much natural light.
