Here’s how to find the perfect tile flooring

Shopping for the perfect tile flooring is truly a treat for the eyes. Not all tiles are the same, though. They all have different strengths and absorption levels that affect their use.

The right or wrong tile impacts your remodeling. Here are some tips for choosing well.

First, understand the difference between wall and floor tiles

Tiles for the floor are thicker, stand up to weight, and are less slippery. Wall tiles are thinner, slippery, and will crack under weight.

Read labels, and discuss your project

The flooring expert must know how you plan to use the porcelain or ceramic tile. The last thing you want to do is put the wrong type in your installation.

Ceramics are broken into categories. This is a one-to-five system developed by the Porcelain and Enamel Institute to determine strength.

Cat-3 is often used in residential applications, while cat-4 is used for heavily trafficked residential floors. Therefore, it is marked on the label.

Understand porcelain tile

Many use it synonymously with ceramic tile flooring. However, it's not the same!

Porcelain is a type of ceramic with a different construction. It is heavier, more dense, and ideal for heavily trafficked floors, such as the kitchen.

Porcelain tile is a large format, comes in many designs and colors–and can be made to look like anything, such as wood and stone.

It also has a low absorption rate and can stand up to the most severe weather.

Other ceramic tiles include:

  1. Squares are ideal for indoor moderately trafficked rooms, also on walls, backsplashes, counters, etc.
  2. Terracotta bricks can be used indoors or out.
  3. Mosaics: Highly decorative, often glass-coated, durable, and mold-mildew resistant. These are trending for bathroom floors.
  4. Subways: Best for indoor low-traffic rooms.
